Interview Question :: Why do so many people (well off or on medicaid) ask for money or donation when they get cancer

It seems that when somones get cancer they play the sympathy card and ask for donations... This lady got low grade breast cancer and her house is almost paid off and she has insurance. I know they dont cover everything but join the group. I am a survivor from 10 years ago and my check gets docked to this day for medical bills. I never asked for donations and it was tough but hey life sucks. This is BS when the people are either already living off the state or are well off. Ok her money is tight.. so refinance.... or pay it later. Instead they will set up jars at gas stations and stores telling a sad sob story asking for money or donations. Now there are situations where putting up a jar and asking for this would be appropriate... But for the most part these (certain) people are just trying to capitalize on their illness... This pisses me off and especially when you see it is not life threatening and it will only take a couple standard procedures .. performed millions of times

Wake up to what some of us go through. I am glad you made it, but I am not. Yes, I am on medicaid and medicare. Yes, I receive disability payments. Luckily, I have always had family that has helped me out and now I live with my sig other, so he makes sure I am taken care of, but lets spell this out. I get 800 a month in disability and 20 a month in food stamps. I do not qual for section 8 housing, or any other help. Rent in the cheepest apt that I would live in would be about 500, electric, 100, and gas about 100. Thats 500. That leaves me 200 to pay my car insurance, bills that I am paying on that I had before the cancer, the payments to my hosp(not even public insurance pays everything) and groceries. That puts me in the hole. And I dont even have a family to try to take care of. Some people have to live on that income and try to support kids. WIthout some sort of help, a lot of these people would be on the streets. Not to mention, not every one can get insurance. Hospitals are only required to perform life saving/stabalizing treatment. Some places will not proceed with treatment until the payment means for the majority of the cost is already lined up. Most people dont have that kind of money even if they do drain their savings. Which means they are sitting there dieing until they get enough money. Most cancer patients who are not working cant refinance anything because the bank wont look at them for a new loan. Some people are trying to salvage their credit and dont want to pay it later. I mean, if they can avoid, why ruin their credit and the next 10 years of their life when this is only gonna last a couple(mine is screwed by the way, I wont be able to get any kind of loan for a very long time). I know you may think most of these people dont need it, but really, most of them do. Even though I had family helping me out, there are times when even just 10$ would have made the diff in the world to me in paying my bills.

Good people have hard times. Some types of cancer treatments cost 250K. I am a oncology nurse, and it isnt fair. Its not fair for a recently retired family who have plans of living comfortable. Enjoying life, now one or both have cancer. Their insurance will not pay for certain treatments. So in order to live, they must sell off everything that they own to give the loved one a chance at life. IT REALLY sucks! It sucks for the good person who has done everything right their whole entire life. Planned their life, saved their money and now HAVE CANCER. How am I going to pay for this? You must understand that medicaide and medicare does not pay for all treatments. They do not provide enough money for the follow up medications. Cancer is HORRIBLE, UGLY... I am so glad to hear that you are doing well and you are healthy now. But, please have consideration for those who are less fortunate. Maybe the person lost their job r/t the cancer. You never know the persons story. I have seen people loose everything! I have seen medicare/medicaid deny treatment because the patient has a young persons cancer not a older persons cancer. How is that fair.. LOST my job cause I am so sick and I can not work..... Now I dont get treatment cause I am to old and I am only 42.... PEOPLE have different stories.... just be sensitive to that!

I understand it if it's a high-risk cancer where the financial situation is really tight, My house is example: Money was tight to start with.. Mom got cancer.. Mom got cancer...again... There are 5 kids in my family.. 3 in university Although we never set up jars anywhere, people usually just anonymously donated to us. Or we went to an agency that deal specifically with this kind of stuff and had them help us pay off a couple of bills (hydro, phone etc) I don't agree with it, if the family is able to make ends meet COngrats on being a 10 year survivor!

I had brain surgery 14 years ago. We had insurance and it helped, but my total bill was over $275,000. We already owned our home but did not want to take out an equity line (get in over your head?) I was (and still am) on disability that only paid $600 a month. I also qualified for medicare which helped pay what the insurance wouldn't. Don't just assume that insurance will pay for everything. When it comes to $275,000 you would be surprised at how quickly they nickle-and-dime you to death and start denying payments "for one reason or another". By the time the insurance company came around we ended up owing about $20,000. Now maybe that's not much to many, but we also had 2 kids, 1 job and many bills due to health issues. We never put jars out but I was quickly surprised at how quickly donations came into help us and we couldn't have done it without them. As for your paycheck getting "docked" that is your own fault for not finding a way to lower the amount due. Don't take it out on others who have to ask others for help.

I can under stand that your up set with this and I do agree that some people do abuse asking for donations but I also know that most people that need donations for example my sister passed away from adrenal cortical carcinoma and if it weren't for the donations our family would not have been able to have the extra time that we did have with her because of the donations we had an extra 3 months ant the only treatment that she could get for this type of cancer was in Maryland and we live in Utah she had to go there every tow weeks and then the medicine that she was taking for her kemo was almost 500 dollars for 20 pills and it is not that easy for some people to get the assistance from the government and even at that they would mot have covered any of the treatments that she had to do. I am glad that you were able to beet your cancer. I cant help but feel that you are struggling with some thing in your life and I hope that you find peace God gave you a second chance make him proud get involved and try to make a difference for the good of you your family and every one.
