Interview Question in SQL Server Performance Tuning

Interview Question :: What is a good salary increment percentage

I work in data migration for a small software company based in Southampton. When I started the job I accepted (what I thought was) a very basic salary of £25,000. Can you tell me what is a good percentage to ask as a salary increment? The job involves Oracle and PL/SQL. I have completed 1 year. I have 2.5 years experience in Oracle related technology. I have also proven my skills at my job and have had very good performance reviews. I have looked around on the internet and have an idea about what the average salary is for my job/skills but I would like your views on this! You don’t need to be in IT – any advice on what sort of percentage increase to demand would be much appreciated.

RE: What is a good salary increment percentage?

Something in the 2-3% range is just covering inflation - its what you'd get if you are essentially not getting a raise at all.

There's quite a differance between 1.5 years of experience and 2.5 years in terms of what you can get on the open market. Based on that, I would be asking for something in the 10-20% range (20% is pretty optimistic, but 10% seems reasonable).

Your better bet is to try to do a little research into what you might _really_ get at other companies. Then you can tell your employer 'look, I like this job, the company, then environment, but I'm getting offers of XYZ elsewhere, you need to close the gap a little!'. Companies don't want your main motivation to be money, but most recognize that young staff can't afford to take a big salary hit to stick around!

Considering that an employer, at an annual review will give you anywhere from nothing to 10% increase, if you can get more than 10%, great.

I'm not in the UK, but I can tell you that the last few years has been an average of 3% in the US.
