Interview Question in SQL Server Jobs

Interview Question :: Is not going to school hurting me? Or am I saving money

I'm 25 years old and have loved computers my whole life. So naturally I now work in an IT dept. I am a Technology Analyst. I have about a year and a half of Desktop troubleshooting, Server issues, Telephony issues and minor software support expirience. My director has 20+ years of IT expirience and he is showing all he knows...all hands on. Now I am assisting in small projects like printer problems or network issues and Im also doing major projects. Including Complete replacement of and sql_server(I assisted)...Now with all the expirience im getting...Is the fact that I did not go to school going to hurt me? If I need to get another job?

What do usual job requirements say? They say, "We need a college education and experience". Hands on experience is a great asset to have and it sounds like you are learning from the "perfect" mentor. However, if it ever comes time to move to a different company or move up in yours to say a supervisor they might ask you why you didn't pursue a degree or at least certification. I would say, if you have the time and extra money, go to school at night, take a few classes at a time and get your degree/certificate. Ask your employer about tuition reimbursement, many offer this if you are going to school for something that pertains to your current job. Good Luck!

It really depends on what your goal is for your ideal job. Obviously you can't be a doctor without a degree - but other fields aren't so strict - you may have a good field now and are working your way up, which is great. Know that the nice thing about college is that you can always go back at any age, but the longer you wait, the more difficult it will be. I went to college and now I'm an independent business owner and never needed any of my formal education.

Not going to school might hold you back later. You could go farther and have more confidence if you had a degree or at least some college.

My brother WAS doing the same thing you are at one point, but he took night courses in computer tec while still working (took him a few years and hard work!) and he now Owns his own extremely successful computer tec business. You are young and have your whole working life ahead of you so go for it, go to school, the more knowledge you have the easier things will be and the further you will go in your chosen career and in life. Good Luck!!
