Interview Question in SQL Server Administration

Interview Question :: I am thinking about returning to school, but I am 28 now and I was never a great student to begin with

I plan to go for a 2 year vocational degree in Computer Science that has an emphasis on Database Administration.

I already do a lot of work in SQL and I also do a lot of various tech/IT work. I have 10 years of IT related experience now, but no certs and no degree. I feel like this has always held me back, even though I am often given more responsibilities than the people I work with who have degrees, I also feel I am paid less and passed up (for promotion) more often too. Basically, I feel like a grunt who does the work to boost others higher.

Anyway, I will have to continue to work full time. I have a house to take care of, and my wife and I just had our first child (baby girl). On top of these responsibilities, I also had(have) A.D.D., but have not taken any meds for it for over 10 years now. School was always hard for me, I just skated by while doing as little as possible to maintain grades that would let me pass and graduate, but nothing more. Any advice? Think I can succeed?

Go for it! I was in the same position as you are. I worked in Accounting but felt like I would never promoted because I didn't have a degree. I decided to go to school at age 28 and it was the best decision I ever made.

My high school GPA was barely a 2.5 and I never thought I would go to college. I was afraid I wasn't smart enough and wouldn't be able to keep up. But guess what? Being successful in college has a lot to do with being resourceful, hard working and following directions. Seriously. The difference between the students who get A's and those who get C's is usually their attention to detail.

If you are hard working and want to do well, I'm sure you will. Just the fact that you have worked in the real world for a while will help you to do well in school. Being older and more mature than most 18 year olds won't hurt either.

Start off slowly, maybe taking one or two online classes and see how you do. When I started back to school, I was working full time while raising my son on my own. I didn't think I would be able to fit anything else into my schedule so I started off with one online class at the local community college and it was great. I had the flexibility to do my work at night or on my lunch break and it gave me the confidence to keep going. I just graduated with my bachelor's and I'm starting a master's program in the fall. It can be done! :o)

I hope this helps! Good Luck!

You'll probably graduate with a 4.0 if you apply yourself. That's what I did after being a horrible student in high school. I spent a decade working for crappy wages and decided to apply myself 100% to an education. It was the best decision I ever made!

That's funny that you say school was hard for you, but you did as little as possible. How hard will it be if you have the desire to learn this time?

First question... how does your wife feel about it? It will affect both of you so she needs to be included. If she is in agreement...

Do it!! I could lie and say it will be a breeze but i wont. It will be hard and sacrifices (temporary) will have to be made. But it will be worth it in the long run. A strong support system helps tremendously!! Do not let the time away stop you. I was out of school for almost 25 years before returning and wasn't the best student in high school either. I maintained a 4.0 until last term. You can co it!! As far as the ADD, I have a friend that has that and he started back adn is doing great. He was on the Dean's list last term. You will have to focus and determine you will do it but it is possible.

Good luck and hope you the best.

I agree with the other person...you could probably get a 4.0 or close to it if you went back. People that have experience and can feel the burden of not having a certificate/degree appreciate the privilege of going to college. My idea would be to check out a technical school that offers a degree in computer network engineering.
