Interview Question in Microsoft Transact-SQL

Interview Question :: Do a SQL- DBA needs to be be a programmer as well

I was under the impression that a DBA was managing data using SQL or T-SQL as programming tool. I keep reading on Dice.com that programming languages are required for a DBA position. Why?/DBA are not application programmers.??

As a DBA you will have to automate certain proceses for the database engine; for example, update of a mirror database, update of certain records of predetermined databases and tables, etc., etc.

Those activities need that you know about programming since the only way to do it is throug a computer program written as a batch script or a store procedure of the database.

I think the reason is that these companies want you to be flexible (or in some cases, cheap). Some of the computer related jobs do require knowledge of Microsoft's .NET framework.

Look at some of the positions at monster.com, careerbuilder.com, or even your newspaper to get an idea.
